21st. January. The sea rougher than I had ever seen it before, as there had been a storm in the night,
our old sow pig died and two of the men threw her overboard, after a mock burial service! dined off baked and boiled puddings; saw a Falmouth pilot boat, the Capt hailed him and he came on board, turned in at 8 no sleep as the ship was on her beams ends the whole night, horrible weather!
22nd. Anchored in Falmouth harbour about 11 a.m. after dinner 4 of the men were ordered into the boat
to fetch water, danced and slept well.
23rd. Never slept better in my life, the sea rather rough, so that the Capt could not get ashore.
24th. Sunday. Rose at 8 a.m. saw a 36 gun Portuguese frigate sailing into the harbour,
went and had my dinner, but was roused by the Portuguese ship saluting the English guard
ship with 21 guns, which was returned and after that the Portuguese saluted with 12 more,
which was not returned; bought a new tambourine so that we had a jolly dance.
25th. Learnt that the Capt was going on shore, my Father asked to accompany him to buy
a lamp but was refused on account of the gunpowder on board, had a dance on deck by moon light.
26th. At anchor still; my Father told me that the Capt had ordered the carpenter to put
a bulls eye in our births, which was immediately done, with which my Father was very much pleased.
27th. At anchor still!
28th. The Capt went ashore and brought on board some live stock, 3 sheep, fowls, ducks etc.
